A rock kicks up on the highway and suddenly you hear that dreaded crack. Your first question is always the same: can this windshield be repaired, or do I need a full replacement? The answer depends on three key factors: the size, location, and type of damage.
Size of the Damage
Most industry guidelines say a chip smaller than a quarter (about 25 mm) and a crack shorter than 15 cm (6 inches) can usually be repaired. Anything larger typically compromises the structural integrity of the glass and requires a full replacement.
Keep in mind that even small chips can spread quickly, especially in cold Ontario winters when temperature swings put stress on the glass. Getting a repair done promptly can save you the cost of a full replacement.
Location Matters
Where the damage sits on your windshield is just as important as its size:
- Edge damage: Chips or cracks within 5 cm of the windshield edge weaken the bond between the glass and the frame. These usually need replacement.
- Driver's line of sight: Even a small repair can leave a slight distortion. If the damage is directly in front of the driver, a replacement may be recommended for safety reasons.
- Near cameras or sensors: Modern vehicles with ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) have cameras mounted behind the windshield. Damage near these sensors often means replacement plus recalibration.
Type of Damage
Not all chips are created equal. Here are the most common types:
- Bullseye: A circular chip with a cone shape. Usually repairable if small.
- Star break: A chip with cracks radiating outward. Repairable if the overall diameter is small enough.
- Combination break: Multiple crack patterns from a single impact point. These are borderline and depend on total size.
- Long crack: A single line crack, often caused by temperature stress. If it has spread beyond 15 cm, replacement is the safer choice.
